After the almost two-hour stoppage in the race, the contest resumed when the green flag waved on lap 12 with Alexander Rossi in the lead. Wickens auto smashed into the wall and climbed up into the catchfence.

IndyCar Series rookie Robert Wickens sustained orthopedic injuries of both legs and a broken arm in a massive crash in Sunday's Verizon IndyCar Series ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway.

Wickens was taken by helicopter for medical treatment following the first-lap accident. Hunter-Reay and Wickens made the initial contact, and Wickens' auto became airborne.

The contact caused Hunter-Reay's vehicle to careen into the wall and Wickens' auto was pulled along for the ride. The two made contact and Hunter-Reay's auto started to spin around.

The race was delayed almost two hours and only eight laps in the 500-mile race had been completed because of Wickens' crash and another accident right before green.

Canadian racing driver Robert Wickens was involved in a brutal crash while contesting the seventh lap of IndyCar's 500-mile race at Pocono Speedway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.

Wickens connected with Ryan Hunter-Reay and shot into a 360-degree spin into the fence. Wickens' vehicle launched over the top of Hunter-Reay and into the catch fencing, spinning around and destroying the fencing.

Canadian James Hinchcliffe and Takuma Sato were among the other drivers involved in the wreck. Hinchcliff seemed to be in pain, grabbing his wrists as he slowly left his vehicle.
