Spencer Pigot

"Beyond relieved that Robert Wickens is awake and alert. wishing all the best to him and Hinchtown", Dario Franchitti tweeted.

After the almost two-hour stoppage in the race, the contest resumed when the green flag waved on lap 12 with Alexander Rossi in the lead. Wickens auto smashed into the wall and climbed up into the catchfence.

May said: "It may not be the prettiest job but it's going to be safe".

IndyCar Series rookie Robert Wickens sustained orthopedic injuries of both legs and a broken arm in a massive crash in Sunday's Verizon IndyCar Series ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway.

Wickens was taken by helicopter for medical treatment following the first-lap accident. Hunter-Reay and Wickens made the initial contact, and Wickens' auto became airborne.

The contact caused Hunter-Reay's vehicle to careen into the wall and Wickens' auto was pulled along for the ride. The two made contact and Hunter-Reay's auto started to spin around.

The race was delayed almost two hours and only eight laps in the 500-mile race had been completed because of Wickens' crash and another accident right before green.

Canadian racing driver Robert Wickens was involved in a brutal crash while contesting the seventh lap of IndyCar's 500-mile race at Pocono Speedway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.

James Hinchcliff was caught up in the wreck and held his wrists as he slowly left the auto. Sato was also checked and released, as were Fittipaldi and Hinchcliffe later. He declined to comment to reporters out of respect for Wickens.

Robert Wickens qualified sixth for Sunday's IndyCar race at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania. "He has been transported by helicopter to hospital", they said.

IndyCar said Wickens was awake and alert as he was taken to a hospital.

It's the same track where Justin Wilson died in 2015 after being hit in the helmet by a piece of debris from a crashed vehicle.

Power had one more shot to jump Rossi in the pits, but just before he dove in on lap 171, he went high while trying to pass the lapped auto of Max Chilton and lost valuable seconds, clearing the way for Rossi to win his first oval race since the 2016 Indy 500.

Wickens connected with Ryan Hunter-Reay and shot into a 360-degree spin into the fence. Wickens' vehicle launched over the top of Hunter-Reay and into the catch fencing, spinning around and destroying the fencing.

Canadian James Hinchcliffe and Takuma Sato were among the other drivers involved in the wreck. Hinchcliff seemed to be in pain, grabbing his wrists as he slowly left his vehicle. Graham Rahal got into the back of Spencer Pigot before the race even got to green. Pigot spun out and hit the wall. Several race cars were collected in the crash.
