Toni Kroos pillories compatriot Mesut Ozil for racism claims

Mesut Ozil Julian Draxler and Toni Kroos

A former colleague of Mesut Ozil in the German national team, Toni Kroos was none too happy at the midfielder's assertion of racism in the camp. But the way he retired was out of order.

On the contrary, we are always committed to diversity and integration. "Mesut was a good example of that, like many of our team mates".

In his long retirement statement Ozil, who has Turkish heritage and was criticised for taking a photograph with Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, accused DFB president Reinhard Grindel of racism and failing to back him in the row over the picture ahead of the tournament.

Arsenal star Ozil cited "racism and disrespect" as the main factors behind his decision to retire from global duty after the disastrous 2018 FIFA World Cup, where defending champions Germany exited at the group stage.

Hailing from Turkish origins, the Arsenal star insisted that racism in and around the German national team forced him to take the decision to walk out of global football.

Chilean officials: Flights hit by wave of false bomb threats
And on Crete, a Condor Airways flight made an emergency landing at Chania airport over an alleged bomb threat on board, local media say.

The German FA has emphatically rejected any allegations of racism and although anti-discrimination bodies have come out in support of Ozil, Kroos described as "nonsense" suggestions that Ozil was ill-treated and made a scapegoat. And he missed the chance to explain himself. "Later he and others were criticized for the performance at the World Cup. The type of criticism was certainly not always at fair but you have to go through that as a player".

After their World Cup campaign, Germany head coach Joachim Loew has promised sweeping changes when he names his squad for the Nations League match against France on September 6 in Munich and the friendly against Peru three days later. He said: "I will continue on my way to the European Championship in 2020 and have set myself as a big goal, that we are significantly more successful there than last".

"And we have to be more unpleasant to play against in terms of defence - without just defending".

Loew welcomed his player's decision, saying Kroos, with his experience, will be central in his planning for Euro 2020. But now his teammate, Toni Kroos, his teammate has now slammed Mesut Ozil for his comments.
