Bobi Wine Due to Appear Before Court Martial in Gulu

"Hon. Kyagulanyi has today been arraigned before the General Court Martial in Gulu and charged... on accounts of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition", said a statement signed by army spokesman Brigadier Richard Karemire.

Meanwhile, other Members of Parliament including Arua Municipality MP elect Kassiano Wadri, Gerald Karuhanga (Ntungamo Municipality), Paul Mwiru (Jinja East) and former Makindye West legislator Michael Mabikke are set to appear before Gulu Chief Magistrates Court.

Kyagulanyi appeared before the Army Court Martial chairman Lt. Gen Andrew Gutti at Gulu barracks on Thursday evening.

Kyagulanyi was arrested in Arua municipality on Monday, where he had gone to campaign for independent candidate Kassiano Wadri ahead of the by-election. Then he was arrested, and he hasn't been seen in public since.

His lawyer, Medard Sseggona, told reporters after Thursday's closed-door hearing that his client had been so "brutalized he cannot walk, he cannot stand, he can only sit with difficulty".

In Kampala, the Ugandan capital, small groups of Kyagulanyi's supporters took to the streets and burned tyres in protest but police quickly dispersed them.

The musician and opposition lawmaker was taken into custody yesterday and is now being charged with treason. "It is hard to say whether he understands this and that". Segona, the lawyer for the defendants, told the magistrate some of the accused had been "badly beaten and tortured during the process and after arresting them" by soldiers.

Wine was admitted to a military hospital on Wednesday for unspecified treatment, the deputy prime minister told parliament.

The new member of parliament has urged his countrymen to stand up against what he calls a failing government. Beaten and bruised, often literally, opposition politicians have largely retreated as the 74-year-old Museveni pursues an even longer stay in power. "Whether what he did that led to his detention is right or wrong... we want to see him because he has a right to be seen by his family, wife and children", Bobi Wine's brother Eddie Yawe said.

Many have expressed support for the 35-year-old MP online, stating that they believe that he has once again been unfairly targeted by Museveni, who is known to use force and violence to suppress the opposition.
