Manafort jury adjourns for the weekend with no verdict

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort goes through security as he arrives at federal court in Washington

I think the whole Manafort trial is very sad, when you look at what's going on there. "So, overall a very good day for Mr. Manafort".

After a full day of deliberation, the 12-person jury in the financial crimes trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort has yet to reach a verdict, meaning the panel will reconvene Friday to continue considering Manafort's fate. The President has repeatedly called the probe a "witch hunt" that hasn't found evidence of Russian collusion with his campaign, and Trump's allies in and out of the White House say the special counsel should wrap things up.

Judge T.S. Ellis III sent the jury of six men and six women back to resume deliberations Friday shortly after 9:30 a.m.

Jurors in the trial are not sequestered but have been instructed not to watch news reports or talk to others about the matter.

"I have the Marshals' protection", Ellis said.

The financial fraud trial is the first courtroom test of the ongoing Russian Federation probe led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

After noting that the one wildcard in the Manafort case is politics, Callan said that as a prosecutor he would worry "if there is somebody on that jury that is a diehard Trump fan you have the President of the United States making comments". On the first day the jury heard testimony, Trump said Manafort had been treated worse than 1920s gangster Al Capone.

It is unusual for a USA president to make comments about the character of a defendant in an ongoing trial and criticize the legal proceedings. "He should have kept his mouth shut", Ohlin added.

The prosecution could request a mistrial, but such a maneuver was very unlikely, Ohlin said.

Since the start of jury selection, the case has drawn packed galleries to the ninth-floor courtroom and to an overflow courtroom three floors below that hosts a closed-circuit broadcast of the proceedings.

Former Manafort deputy Rick Gates testified that shelf companies - the type of company Manafort allegedly used to set up bank accounts in Cyprus - were those that had been already set up on Cyprus' corporate registry so a person would not have to create and name a new company. As for reasonable doubt, he described it as "a doubt based on reason" and told jurors it does not require proof "beyond all doubt".

Wallace pointed out that Trump went so far as to say "it's sad" Manafort was prosecuted at all.
