88.5 WXPN to play nonstop Aretha Franklin songs today as tribute to the late singer

The legendary Aretha Franklin died Thursday at the age of 76 at her home in Detroit.

Wonder, who is also a Detroit native, also shared his admiration for her late father, Reverend C.L. Franklin, noting how much the two inspired his music.

Franklin was cemented as a superstar in the 1960's, with classic hits such as "Respect", "Think", "I Say A Little Prayer" and "Chain of Fools" making her an icon around the world.

She was the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Though her influence was felt throughout music, a critical part of her legacy lies in gospel, where she got her start.

In 2010, she suffered serious health problems, but continued to perform until late past year, singing last in November 2017 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation in NY. "She touched every genre". Just being around her was electrifying. "We sang at the White House and she was so sweet and she was so cute, and I was like, 'How are you a real person?' It's an honor to have met her".

Franklin's funeral will be held at Greater Grace Temple for the singer's friends and family.

"For more than 50 years, she stirred our souls". Thankfully she spent her final moments peacefully in the company of family and friends. "Her voice was unique, her piano playing underrated - she was one of my favourite pianists", John said, in part.

Here's a collection, via Newsuem, of some of the front pages that marked Franklin's death, beginning with the place she died and the place she was born.

"Aretha was a rare treasure whose unmatched musical genius helped craft the soundtrack to the lives of so many". Her closest relatives are planning a 4-day celebration of her life, which will include an open casket memorial service open to the public at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit.

Franklin passed away on Thursday at 9.50am surrounded by family and friends.
