Storm Ernesto on course for the United Kingdom and Ireland this weekend

Ernesto will be an ex-subtropical storm by the time it reaches the United Kingdom, and should clear into the North Sea over the course of Sunday morning - but will leave a legacy of overcast and muggy conditions.

Yorkshire is set to be hit by long periods of heavy rain over the weekend as Storm Ernesto looks set to batter the UK. The Category 1 hurricane was packing maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour with higher gusts.

While the storm "has likely reached its peak intensity", it should be able to "maintain its intensity due in part to its expected fast forward speed over the North Atlantic", warned the NHC.

Moderate to heavy rainfall will move into western Ireland on Saturday afternoon, and spread into Scotland, Wales and northern England on Sunday morning.

However, uncertainty remains over the exact path and timings of the storm, which should mainly fizzle out by the time it reaches the UK. It will continue into Sunday morning however it's expected to clear by midday.

Temperatures are forecast to remain in the teens and mid-20Cs this weekend, a far cry from the hottest spell since the summer since 1976 baked Britain in July.

Thermometers could surge into the high 20Cs in parts of south-east England and London on Saturday and Sunday, the warmest days this week.

"We are talking about temperatures in the high 20s that are a possibility for Tuesday and Wednesday next week".
