Sprint and LG hope to launch the first 5G smartphone next year

Unfortunately, neither company has given much info on the phone; we don't know whether to expect the LG G8 to be 5G-capable or if this is a different phone entirely, but either way the companies are looking to ship this 5G phone in the first half of 2019. "Today's announcement brings us one step closer to putting a beautifully-designed advanced 5G smartphone in our customer's hands". All four major United States carriers have advanced 5G roadmaps, but initial deployments will be restricted to Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband in major cities until the first 5G smartphones arrive next year. Oh, and as for the "first 5G phone" bit, it's worth noting that Motorola is working on a 5G mod for its Z line of devices.

The first commercial 5G networks will go live in the United States later in 2018, offering faster speeds, greater capacity and lower latency.

The price of the phone and exact launch date will be announced later, Sprint said in a news release.

Whether Sprint will be able to finally merge with T-Mobile or not in time for the upcoming 5G revolution, the least popular of America's "big four" wireless service providers is making some bold claims in regards to this potentially groundbreaking technology.

It'll be interesting to see how quickly hardware brands upgrade their phones to support the new network. We're apparently talking "full-length HD movie downloads" completed "in seconds instead of minutes", as well as "graphic-heavy videos and high speed games" played without "delays, hiccups or lag-time".

Sprint is the country's fourth largest operator and plans to launch 5G in nine cities - Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix and Washington DC - in 2019.
