Measles outbreak hits more than 100 people in 21 states including Indiana

More than 100 cases of measles have been diagnosed this year in 21 states and the District of Columbia, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Wednesday.

According to CDC, there have already been 107 cases reported this year.

In 2017 alone, there were 118 reported cases of measles. Those cases were the result of exposure outside of the country.

Measles is still common in other countries across Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa.

To combat the measles outbreak, Brazil launched a campaign this month to vaccinate all children between ages 1 and 5 - regardless of whether they have previously been vaccinated.

Measles is a respiratory disease caused by a virus.

Measles is considered highly contagious and can be spread through coughs and sneezes.

Symptoms develop between six and 19 days after infection, and include a runny nose, cough, sore eyes, a fever and a rash.

The following year, a "large, multi-state" outbreak of measles was linked to Disneyland in Anaheim; though a source was never identified, it is believed a traveler who contracted the virus overseas visited the theme park while infectious, according to CDC. A red or reddish-brown rash also appears, first on the face at the hairline and spreading down to the entire body.
