NASCAR star Kasey Kahne says he's stepping away from being a full-time driver - explaining the grind is taking too much of a toll on his personal life.

"I've thought about this decision for many months, if not longer", Kahne wrote on his Twitter account. The 38-year-old veteran now drives the No. 95 for Leavine Family Racing and his contract was set to expire at the end of the season.

"The highs didn't outweigh the lows and the grueling schedule takes a toll on your quality of life", Kahne said.

Kasey Kahne, who burst onto the scene at the height of NASCAR's popularity as one of several drivers expected to carry the sport in the new century, announced his retirement from full-time NASCAR racing on Thursday.
