Maryland takes responsibility for Jordan McNair's death

"You entrusted Jordan to our care, and he is never returning home again, '" Loh added.

The final report into McNair's death, which is being compiled by a team of sports-medicine experts, is expected by September 15.

Maryland athletic director Damon Evans pauses as he speaks at a press conference held today to address the school's football program and the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair, who collapsed on a practice field and subsequently died, in College Park, Md.

Head coach DJ Durkin is also on administrative leave and his future is unclear. But the most damning revelation Tuesday was that the university's athletic training and medical staff misread McNair's symptoms and failed to perform the most basic recommended actions to deal with a unsafe heatstroke incident. Although other major college football programs have admitted some fault in recent player deaths, it does not usually come so soon after the events take place.

Loh said the allegations raised in the report "are totally inconsistent with what we stand for and our values, which is about education, preparing student athletes for life, and to be treated with respect and dignity".

Loh said on Tuesday that the university has one investigation to look into how a player died after a workout and another investigation into the alleged abusive culture. He would use profanity a lot, try to push kids when they reached their limit during workouts.

"I believe I'm the one to lead us through this very hard time", Evans said. "I want to make the same commitment to the parents of all of our student-athletes, and to our entire campus community: We will do everything within our power to ensure that no University of Maryland student-athlete is ever again put in a situation where his or her safety and life are at foreseeable risk". "In this case, we learned about these allegations from the media".

The opening weekend of Premier League season 2018/19 concluded on Sunday with three games, and they certainly did not disappoint. French full-back Benjamin Mendy strode forward and cut the ball back to Bernardo Silva who made no mistake with his finish.

Evans also announced that the football program "parted ways" with strength and conditioning coach Rick Court, who later explained on Twitter he had resigned.

McNair's temperature was not taken and the staff did not apply cold-water immersion treatment, Evans said.

The four-person panel looking into the matter includes former U.S. District Court judge Brenson Legg, former U.S. District Court judge Alex Williams, Baltimore lawyer Charles Scheeler and a fourth, unnamed member.

They described a meeting earlier in the day with McNair's parents during which they apologized and took responsibility for the medical missteps that led to the tragedy and an allegedly flawed football culture.

However, Evans said during the press conference that preliminary info indicates McNair "did not receive appropriate medical care" and that an "emergency response plan was not appropriately followed".

CBS Sports will update this breaking news story shortly.
