Bayer's shares is taking a plunge after a California court ruled against Monsanto, which Bayer just acquired, and ordered it to pay RM1.18 billion in damages to a cancer-stricken man. - EPA pic, August 13, 2018. It says it will no longer use the Monsanto name.

Aware of the often poisonous reputation of the United States firm, which makes genetically modified seeds and "crop protection" technologies like pesticides, Bayer plans to ditch the Monsanto name once the takeover is complete. Having finished last week with a market capitalisation of €87.06 billion, it closed last night at €78.08 billion.

In an uncompromising ruling, the court attributed actual "malice" to Monsanto's actions, deciding that there was evidence the company had known that its product was carcinogenic, but actively covered that fact up. It has about 20,000 employees and a year ago generated revenues of $14.64 billion and gross profit of $7.94 billion. It...

Australia's National Farmers' Federation has rejected the finding of a U.S. court that the weedkiller Roundup causes cancer, saying it set a "reckless precedent" that could harm agriculture.

Tobias said Monsanto's promised appeal could result in the charges being reduced - but said the company "might want to consider settling now, depending on its calculus of the risk that it might lose on appeal and the adverse publicity that might arise from losing or from continuing to contest the verdict". The court awarded Johnson $39 million in future losses and a whopping $250 million in punitive damages.

Working for a school district in Benicia, California, about 40 miles east of San Francisco, Johnson mixed and sprayed hundreds of gallons of Roundup. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, and in July 2017, after chemotherapy and other treatments, his oncologist gave him six months to live.

"Despite the Environmental Protection Agency's failure to require labeling, we are proud that an independent jury followed the evidence and used its voice to send a message to Monsanto that its years of deception regarding Roundup is over and that they should put consumer safety first over profits", Wisner said in a statement after the verdict. "It would be nice if we could tell people why they get it, but we can't". "As the northern Germans say, 'In court and on the high seas, you're in God's hands'".
