Western Alberta unemployment rate back down to 6 per cent

'Another head scratcher': Canada adds 54100 jobs in July

Part-time employment jumped by 82,000 jobs while 28,000 full-time positions were shed. Secondly, they point out how the public sector accounted for a large chunk of the increase at 49,600, while the private sector only tallied up 5,200. That's the slowest pace since February. "On the plus side, the number of unemployed fell and more Canadians were drawn to the labour force - both signs of a healthy economy", he wrote. But, it could be an indicator of whether the Bank of Canada will increase interest rates next month. CIBC predicts the next rate increase will land in October as the central bank continues to proceed cautiously along its rate-hiking path.

The Bank of Canada raised its key lending rate in July by 0.25 percentage points to 1.50 percent. He also forecast that the loonie would be weaker toward year-end.

Compared with a year earlier, overall employment was up 1.3% following the addition of 245,900 jobs for an increase driven by 210,500 new full-time positions.

The city's jobless figure rose to 6.7 per cent in July from 6.1 per cent in June, despite the reported creation of thousands of new jobs in the province since the previous month.

Ontario, B.C., and Newfoundland and Labrador all recorded employment increases, with declines or little change elsewhere.

While the monthly employment gains were the strongest this year, total actual hours worked was up just 1.3 per cent in July, the lowest since November 2017. Those gains were mostly due to growth in full-time work.

On Friday, Statistics Canada said employment rose in a number of services-producing industries: educational services; health care and social assistance; information, culture and recreation; and the "other services" industry.

More women between the ages of 25 and 54 years old were working in July as the category saw a gain of 30,300 jobs.

Today's focus will be on Canada's jobless rate as Stats Can is set to release July's employment numbers.
