"This year the moon is young and will not obstruct the vision, so we will be able to see 100 "shooting stars" an hour", Muhamed Muminovic, a member of the Sarajevo Orion astrological society, told Reuters.

Every year, our planet passes through a cloud of dust left behind a huge comet, and this year we're passing through from Monday 6 August to Sunday 19 August, but the night of the best and brightest of the meteor shower hitting our atmosphere will be Sunday 12 August!

The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most reliable showers year-after-year as Comet Swift-Tuttle that creates has been in orbit for thousands of years. This time the shower will be especially visible thanks to the August 11 new moon, leaving a dark and hopefully clear sky. NASA recommends heading out to see the show during predawn hours, but meteor streaks may appear as early as 10 pm; see an updated list of activity here.

A meteor shower lit up the skies above Europe and North America on Saturday night, giving star gazers a rare opportunity to see a display of shooting stars with the naked eye.

If you live in an urban area, you might want to take a drive to avoid city lights, which can make the meteor shower seem faint.

The Virtual Telescope Project will be streaming a view of the Perseid meteor shower on Sunday from the Castel Santa Maria in Italy's Perugia province, where the community is restoring the 16th-century church that has been damaged by several earthquakes.

"Meteor videos recorded by the NASA All Sky Fireball Network are also amiable each morning; to identify Perseids in these videos look for the events labelled "PER".

And don't forget to grab your camera before you head out. Wherever you are this weekend, do not forget to look up.
