Sevilla threaten Super Cup action over non-EU players

Dembele-Cropped

Barcelona battled back to defeat Sevilla 2-1 and win the Spanish Supercup on Sunday with French World Cup victor Ousmane Dembele hitting a sensational victor to help give Lionel Messi a winning start as captain.

Wall game: Lionel Messi tries for goal from a free-kick.

Ousmane Dembele later made it 2-1 with a thumping long-range finish, while Sevilla squandered a golden chance to equalise when Wissam Ben Yedder saw his penalty saved in the final seconds.

Barca boss Ernesto Valverde also includes Clement Lenglet for his competitive debut against his former club, with the Frenchman lining up alongside Gerard Pique, who announced his retirement from worldwide football this week.

There was still time for late drama when Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen brought down Aleix Vidal in the area as the Sevilla youngster closed in on an equaliser.

Barcelona signings Malcom, Arturo Vidal and Arthur will more than likely be Barca's three non-EU players on Sunday, though Brazilian centre-back Marlon has also travelled with the team.

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) announced that teams could field an unlimited number of players without European Union citizenship, a change in the rules for La Liga, which limits teams to three non-EU players in a matchday squad.

And should Valverde name what Sevilla call "an improper line-up" on Sunday night, Los Hispalenses have threatened to pull out of the game which is played out annually between the La Liga champions and Copa del Rey winners.

Malcom has been left out of Barcelona's Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla.

The 21-year-old winger was signed in a surprise £36.5 million deal from Bordeaux this summer and was expected to make his official debut against Sevilla.

Philippe Coutinho has recently acquired a Portuguese passport through his wife, which means he is no longer considered a non-EU player.
