Kavanaugh shows stance on indicting president

It's Official The Date for Judge Kavanaugh's Supreme Court Hearing Has Been Set

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday did begin releasing a small slice of documents related to Kavanaugh's work in the early 2000s for Bush, including the administration's response to the September 11 attacks. But due to the 51-49 split in the Senate, Republicans will need to be almost unanimous, or persuade a few Democrats, if they want Kavanaugh to be confirmed. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said in a statement Friday.

Republicans are eager to confirm President Donald Trump's nominee ahead of the new court session October 1, as Justice Anthony Kennedy retires. Questioning will begin the following day.

Kavanaugh's views on executive power and the legality of a special counsel investigation have become one of the top issues as senators debate his nomination to the Supreme Court ahead of hearings scheduled for after the August Senate recess.

But Grassley noted in his announcement that his team has reviewed thousands of pages of Kavanaugh's judicial opinions and records from the White House legal service, and the timeline still provides room for review of additional documents.

"We believe an indictment should not be pursued while the President is in Office", Kavanaugh wrote.

White House spokesman Raj Shah said Kavanaugh was looking forward to speaking with Congress, reports CNN.

"Democrats have already announced that they oppose him, so this claim that they need more time or more documents is nothing more than a show, a fishing expedition designed to obstruct and create gridlock", she said.

"He's a mainstream judge. He has a record of judicial independence and applying the law as it is written", Grassley said in a statement, noting that Kavanaugh has met with dozens of senators.

But Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who has promised to fight Kavanaugh's nomination, said in a statement that Republicans were in a "mad rush" to hold hearings after deciding to block almost all of Kavanaugh's records from public release.

"At this current pace, we have plenty of time to review the rest of emails and other records that we will receive from President Bush and the National Archives", he said. "It's time for the American people to hear directly from Judge Kavanaugh at his public hearing".

Following the hearings and the vote from the committee, Kavanaugh's nomination would then be considered by the full Senate.

Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY and Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the ranking member on the Judiciary Committee, have held off on meeting with Kavanaugh over the document dispute. John McCain has been receiving cancer treatment in his home state, Republicans can not afford to lose any votes and hope to advance Kavanaugh's nomination if no Democrats support him. Chuck Grassley. Kavanaugh's appearance will be followed by testimony from legal experts and people who know the judge. "They seem to be more frightened of this nominee's record and history than any we've ever considered".

Grassley praised Kavanaugh as a highly respected and qualified nominee.
