Twitter admits Infowars tweets broke rules, but the account stays up

The Liberal Attack on Our Right to Listen

Twitter admitted that the InfoWars account held by far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has violated its rules but says at least for now, it won't ban it from the platform.

But as the report notes, Jones and Infowars' accounts remain for now.

Despite the decisions made by YouTube and Facebook, among others, to rid themselves of Jones' controversial content, Twitter said this week that Jones hadn't violated its policies, commenting that "When users violate these policies repeatedly, like our policies against hate speech and harassment or our terms prohibiting circumvention of our enforcement measures, we terminate their accounts". While Twitter required those tweets be deleted, the company can not use them as grounds to take further action against the accounts, the spokesperson said.

However, a CNN report has since claimed it has found multiple examples of Jones's account breaching Twitter rules.

CNN's Oliver Darcy looked into that and found that content that got Jones disciplined elsewhere also appeared on Twitter. "Had he done so, we would have taken action against him as well".

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey took to the platform earlier this week to explain his Twitter's decision to keep Jones' accounts live despite his removal from other platforms including YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music. Some recent tweets did violate current rules. Jones said on his program Friday that he had instructed his staff to do so and "take the super high road", though he contested whether the tweets violated any Twitter rules.

Pep Guardiola not thinking about retaining Premier League title
Arsenal host Manchester City at the Emirates tomorrow (Sunday). 'People say we have to forget what we did last season. Arsenal are also without long-term casualty Laurent Koscielny , while England worldwide Danny Welbeck also misses out.

Now, even though it admits that is not the case, Twitter said that it would've asked for the offending tweets to be deleted, and that has already happened.

Jones has frequently used his site to spread horrifyingly disgusting conspiracy theories, including his belief that the Sandy Hook school shooting (in which dozens of 5- and 6-year-olds and their teachers were killed by a mass shooter) was a hoax, and that victims and their families were so-called "crisis actors".

The reporting by CNN to uncover these tweets is commendable, but it shouldn't be up to news organizations to expose these problems.

The responsibility ultimately rests with Twitter.

InfoWars and Jones have been under fire over the last few weeks.
