Torchlight Frontiers announced for PS4, Xbox One, and PC

Torchlight Frontiers

The full game is expected to be available in 2019 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The trailer shows a commander delivering a speech to her troops, warning them of goblins, monsters, zombies, and all sorts of other beasts which pose a threat to their civilization. With her soldiers riled up for the battle ahead, they charge headlong towards a portal. In true "Torchlight" style, players will team up with friends and their devoted pets to hack and slash their way through a vibrant world, discover ancient ruins of lost civilizations, and fearless dungeons filled with riches and unsafe creatures, Perfect World said.

Echtra Games is the development team behind the new title.

The latest iteration will be a shared-world action-RPG, bringing back numerous features and mechanics the Torchlight series is known for, with Schaefer assembling "an all-star team of developers", according to Perfect World Senior Vice President, Yoon Im. Despite the "shared-world" moniker, the devs say you shouldn't expect this to quite be an MMO, even with some persistent areas shared between players.

Announcement of the closure prompted Runic studio head Marsh Lefler to reassure the public, stating "you haven't heard the last of us".

When Runic Games first announced Torchlight, there was undeniable excitement surrounding the project namely because of who was behind it: Travis Baldree together with Max and Erich Schaefer, the latter two being the co-founders of Blizzard North and also the creators of Diablo.

"Perfect World Entertainment has had a strong working relationship with Max Schaefer, dating back to the original Torchlight game, and we believe in his vision to evolve the Torchlight series", said Yoon Im, senior vice president of publishing at Perfect World Entertainment.

Perfect World will reveal more information about the game at unspecified date in the future.

Those who attend Gamescom or PAX West will have a chance to go hands-on with an early demo of Torchlight Frontiers. "The team is building something truly special, and we can't wait for fans to play it for the first time at gamescom and PAX West". Personally, we found both games to be rather great.
