Tech stocks drive Nasdaq higher; Dow, S&P flat

Dow down 200 emerging markets crashing on US-Turkey geopolitical concerns

The Russell 2000 gained 13.43 points, or 0.8 percent.

The benchmark Dow Jones Industrial Average and broader S&P 500 finished the week at a loss while the tech-heavy Nasdaq posted a slender gain.

The S&P 500 index fell 4.12 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 2,853.58.

Major equity indexes in the US failed to determine a clear trend on Thursday as major sectors showed varying performances.

Markets in Europe were also turbulent with Germany's DAX falling two percent, French CAC 40 falling nearly two percent, and Britain's FTSE 100 declining 0.8 percent.

The Russell 2000 is up 151.29 points, or 9.9 percent.

"Today's impact has set the markets in a temporary risk-off sentiment", said Matt Forester, chief investment officer of BNY Mellon's Lockwood Advisors.

The euro was down 0.5% to $1.1463 and the dollar hit a one-year high as investors looked for safe assets, before falling slightly.

Microchip's shares fell 10.5 percent, the biggest decliner on the S&P, after it forecast disappointing second-quarter revenue.

Data on Friday showed US consumer prices rose in July and the underlying trend continued to strengthen, pointing to a steady increase in inflation pressures.

For the week, the Dow fell 0.6 per cent and the S&P 500 dipped 0.3 per cent.

S&P technology sector's 0.5 percent fall was led by chipmakers.

Shares of trade-sensitive companies also declined, including Boeing, 3M and Caterpillar, which were all down at least 1.4 percent.

The Nasdaq added 27.09 points, or 0.3 percent.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.68-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 1.58-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq. Excluding the energy sector, the earnings growth estimate declines to 20.4 percent, according to Thomson Reuters.
