Svitolina grounds Konta to keep title defense on course

Johanna Konta

Ukraine's No. 1 in tennis Elina Svitolina provided first medical aid to her opponent Mihaela Buzarnescu - right at the tennis court.

Last year, Svitolina won the canadian Premier 5, winning in Toronto.

British number one Johanna Konta moved into the Rogers Cup third round by beating two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka in a match that was halted by rain on Wednesday.

In the third round of the competition planted under 5-m number Svitolina 1 hour 25 minutes defeated Joann Conti from the United Kingdom - 6:3, 6:4, according to UKRINFORM.

The Ukrainian No.1 was never taken to deuce and surrendered just three points behind her first serve overall in the set, and looked to be on course for an uncomplicated win as she was the first to break in the second set.

The Romanian battled through three gruelling sets and three hours on court to beat Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6 (11-9) 4-6 7-5, but her dismissal of five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams was a much quicker affair.

Konta was 6-3 3-0 ahead when play was suspended until 11am (4pm BST) on Thursday, raising the prospect of a third round clash with world number five Elina Svitolina the same day if Azarenka yields.

Svitolina will now go on to face either Elise Mertens or Aryna Sabalenka.
