Djokovic, Nadal win in Toronto

Rogers Cup results LIVE

Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic reached the second round of the Toronto Masters here on Tuesday, with both men polishing their pre-US Open form.

Stan Wawrinka put his comeback from knee surgery back on track with a 1-6 7-5 7-5 win over Nick Kyrgios.

There was a crowd-pleasing upset on Centre Court, as Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime ousted France's Lucas Pouille 6-4 6-3, a day before the underdog's 18th birthday.

Four-times champion Novak Djokovic and top seed Nadal advanced to the third round of the weather-interrupted event.

The victory in just over two hours avenged a 2015 loss to Kyrgios in Canada, when the Swiss had to retire.

Kyrgios and Wawrinka, while enjoying an amicable relationship now, were embroiled in a dicey moment in Canada three years ago when the Aussie alleged that countryman Thanasi Kokkinakis had slept with Wawrinka's girlfriend and WTA Tour player Donna Vekic.

Djokovic broke Basic in the sixth game of the first set to go ahead 4-2 and then wrapped up the opener three games later when he fired an ace down the middle.

In second round play, Grigor Dimitrov survived a lengthy rain delay to turn away Fernando Verdasco in a final set breaker and in the early morning hours Marin Cilic got past countryman Borna Coric also in three.

Djokovic, now ranked 10th in the world, is playing his first tournament since winning a fourth Wimbledon title last month.

German second seed Alexander Zverev, the victor last week in Washington, beat American Bradley Klahn 6-4 6-4 while fourth-seeded South African Kevin Anderson edged Russia's Evgeny Donskoy 4-6 6-2 7-6 (7-0).

Benoit Paire has continued his racquet-smashing ways in Toronto, and Rafael Nadal's reaction said it all.

The decider ended in a 22-game tiebreak, with the former world No 3 taking the set 7-6 (12-10).

Wawrinka will face Marton Fucsovics in the second round with a possible clash with Rafael Nadal looming after that.

Kerber, from Germany wilted in the sticky heat at IGA Stadium in her first match since Wimbledon.

"Of course the good results would be good for the confidence but the conditions are completely different - courts, the ball especially".

Elsewhere, five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova thrashed fellow Russian Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 6-2, while world number 43 Johanna Konta of Great Britain was leading two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 6-3, 3-0 when their match was stopped by rain.

"The first thing that I need to do well is play my best tennis", Nadal said. "Losing in this kind of tournament, it's not something I don't care about".

The pair were facing each other for the first time in eight years. I know from my experience if I play well here and Cincinnati it's a little bit easier to play well at the US Open but not decisive.
