At least 4 people killed as Jordan police raid terrorists' hideout

The chain of events in Jordan began Friday when assailants detonated a home-made bomb under a police auto guarding a music festival in the predominantly Christian town of Fuheis, west of the capital of Amman.

"The investigations indicated that a primitive explosive device was planted in an area before a gendarmerie and Public Security Department forces were to take their regular position near the Fuhais Festival", it said, according to the Jordan Times.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Omar al-Razzaz vowed that Jordan would "not be complacent in the hunt for terrorists".

Militants from Islamic State and other radical jihadist groups have long targeted the USA -allied kingdom and dozens of militants are now serving long prison terms.

The shoot-out in the city of Salt, northwest of the Jordanian capital, Amman, came after a home-made bomb exploded on Friday under a patrol vehicle at a music festival, killing one security force member and wounding six.

Security forces are seen near a damaged building one day after the security incident, at the city of Al Salt, Jordan.

Jordanian authorities did not say what motivated the Fuheis attackers, and there was no claim of responsibility.

Jordan has played a key role in an global military coalition that helped push back Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in neighbouring Syria and Iraq. The suspects holed up inside opened fire and set off powerful explosions, officials said.

The side of the building partially collapsed, possibly because of a blast from a suicide bomber inside, a security source said.

On Sunday, she added that the bodies of three suspects were pulled out of the rubble.

The security forces eventually arrested three suspects, she said, adding that the operation in Salt was still "ongoing".

Security forces have been extra vigilant with warnings that sympathizers of Islamic State could launch revenge attacks after the militants were driven out of most of the territory they once controlled in Syria and Iraq.

In June 2016, a cross-border auto bombing launched from Syria killed seven Jordanian border guards. The attack on Saturday killed a security man and injured six others, Saudi Press Agency said.

Jordan is considered to an important security ally, particularly by the United States and Israel which view any signs of unrest there with concern.
