2nd Unite the Right rally happening in Washington Sunday

U.S. Park Police are seen working in riot gear in Washington. Government and police officials in the nation’s capital say they are confident the city can manage to host this weekend’s planned white nationalist

On Saturday, Trump wrote on Twitter that the "riots" in Charlottesville "resulted in senseless death and division". We must come together as a nation.

"I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence", Trump added, before declaring, "Peace to ALL Americans!".

The area also includes the street where Heather Heyer was killed when a man attending the rally is accused of plowing into a crowd of people with his vehicle.

Permits for Sunday's "Unite the Right 2" rally indicated that about 400 demonstrators are expected in Lafayette Square, a park adjacent to the White House.

Shut it down: According to DCist, 22 different organizations, including Black Lives Matter Charlottesville, Black Lives Matter D.C., Maryland Antifa, the D.C. Antifascist Collective, and the Frederick Socialists have teamed up for an event called Shut It Down D.C.

During an interview this summer, Kessler said he was still "coming to terms" with what happened at last year's Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville and said he apologized to the family of Heather Heyer, who was killed when a motorist drove his vehicle into a group of counter-protesters.

"We're bringing people from all over Sandtown, and all over Baltimore City, to go to the Unite the Right Rally", said Reverend Rodney Hudson of Ames Memorial United Methodist Church. "We denounce hate. We denounce anti-Semitism, and we denounce the rhetoric we expect to hear this Sunday".

Washington police chief Peter Newsham said firearms will be prohibited at the rallies, even for gun owners with legal licenses. The following day, a much larger gathering of white nationalists near a downtown park erupted into violence.

On Wednesday, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, D, declared a state of emergency, allowing officials to marshal resources to prepare for the potential impact of events in and around Charlottesville and northern Virginia.

A year ago the goal of the rally on August 12, 2017 was to protest city plans to remove a statue of General Robert E. Lee who led the Confederate army during the Civil War.

Local and state authorities framed the weekend's heightened security as a necessary precaution. Their permit says they are "protesting civil rights abuse in Charlottesville".

Nearby, dozens of officers carrying helmets and with gas masks strapped to their belts stood watch in the park where hundreds of white nationalists gathered last summer at a rally planned in part to protest the city's plans to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee.

The violence led to the death of 32-year-old counter protester Heather Heyer who was struck by a auto.

Two Virginia state troopers who were monitoring the rally were later killed in the line of duty when their helicopter crashed. "We acted in advance of last year's horrific event in Charlottesville and if we become aware of similar information we won't hesitate to do so again".

A months-long investigation by former U.S. Attorney Tim Heaphy into what happened during the deadly "Unite the Right" rally found that law enforcement failed on multiple fronts, including one that may have led directly to the death of Heather Heyer.

Event: The rally will start in Lafayette Park in Washington, D.C., and run from August 11 to 12.
