North Korea Says US "Throwing Water" Over Confidence-Building Efforts

John Bolton Says North Korea Hasn't Done Much To Rid Itself Of Nuclear Weapons

"It will serve as a platform to discuss plans to overcome the current situation - the main point will be to come up with a plan to convince the U.S. to cooperate on improving inter-Korean ties despite its reluctance to lift worldwide sanctions against North Korea", said Kim Joon-hyung, an worldwide studies professor at Handong Global University.

North Korea on Thursday accused the United States of acting in bad faith, saying Washington's push for full sanctions pressure against Pyongyang would stall progress on the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

In its statement, North Korea outlined "goodwill measures" it has taken since the historic meeting in June between President Trump and Kim Jong Un, including its discontinuation of nuclear testing and returning the remains of fallen Korean War soldiers to families in the U.S.

North Korea's nuclear weapons program has caused worldwide tension for decades and the rhetoric and threats from Kim and Trump had been especially hostile before their June meeting. It also claims that "high-level officials within the USA administration are making baseline allegations against [North Korea] and making desperate attempts at intensifying the global sanctions and pressure".

The country claimed that the U.S.is denying it "basic decorum" and is clinging "to the outdated acting script which the previous administrations have all tried and failed", warning that they "cannot expect any progress in the implementation" of the joint agreement between the two countries reached earlier this year.

The foreign ministry said actions taken by the USA equate to "throwing cold water" over their efforts, calling it an "indeed foolish act that amounts to waiting to see a boiled egg hatch out".

The stark comments come after Trump and Kim's June meeting in Singapore, during which the White House said the North had made firm pledges to rid itself of its nuclear weapons. "It's just North Korea that has not taken the steps we feel are necessary to denuclearize".

But the North Korea statement separates Mr. Trump from "high-level officials", thus allowing the the country to rail against the USA, while leaving the door open for the president to continue his dialogue with leader Kim Jong Un.

"They have to understand that the worldwide community still expects them to denuclearize and so we're willing to wait if they want to wait, but we're not willing to wait for too long", said Haley, who has pushed through three United Nations sanctions packages since arriving at the world body 18 months ago.

"This is all in North Korea's court", Haley told reporters traveling with her during a visit to Colombia, where she attended the inauguration of new Colombian President Ivan Duque and met migrants who had fled Venezuela.

USA officials have declined to comment on a report on the Vox news website on Wednesday saying that North Korea had repeatedly rejected a US proposal for it to cut its nuclear arsenal by 60 to 70 per cent within six to eight months. But the United States has repeatedly reiterated that North Korea's complete denuclearization comes before such a goal, amid slower-than-expected progress in relevant talks.
