NFL preseason sees kneeling, raised fists, during national anthem

On Thursday night, Dolphins receivers Kenny Stills and Wilson were sitting on the bench when the anthem began and then they took a knee.

Many NFL teams played their first preseason games on Thursday after a highly controversial offseason focused on the league's response to players who protest during the national anthem.

Some players held their fists in the air, while others made a decision to kneel, despite the controversy surrounding the action.

It happened before the Dolphins game against the Buccaneers, and former Chief Albert Wilson was one of the players who took a knee.

Robert Quinn, a defensive end for the Dolphins, raised his fist.

In Philadelphia, where the world champs played the Pittsburgh Steelers, Eagles captain and safety Malcolm Jenkins and cornerback De'Vante Bausby raised their fists during the anthem.

Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett, a frequent protestor past year when he played for the Seattle Seahawks, walked out of the tunnel as the anthem played.

In July, the NFL chose to suspend its new anthem policy which required all players on the field to stand for the national anthem. Eagles defensive end Chris Long had his arm around Jenkins in a show of solidarity.

Trump in June uninvited the Eagles from visiting the White House in honor of their Super Bowl win months earlier. Players who do not want to stand during the anthem are allowed to remain in the locker room (or in the tunnel) without facing punishment. Individual teams would be responsible for disciplining any demonstrators. In July, the league and players association jointly announced that the new rule was "frozen" until further notice.
