Infowars app surges in popularity after tech platforms move against Alex Jones

Twitter CEO Dorsey goes on Hannity to defend racist posts, Alex Jones

We'll enforce if he does.

The rush of interested users comes after influential tech platforms - including Facebook, Google-owned YouTube and Apple - took their most assertive actions yet against Jones and his Infowars brand for violating their rules against hateful language.

"We didn't suspend Alex Jones or Infowars yesterday", Dorsey said in a series of tweets late Tuesday.

Apple will continue to allow the InfoWars mobile app on its App Store even after removing nearly all of the podcast episodes associated with Alex Jones' conspiracy-theory website from its platforms. On Twitter Wednesday, Dorsey said the appearance on Hannity's radio program has been planned "for weeks". "We do rank the timeline for relevance, so it might take some scrolling to see everything, but you can also turn that ranking off in the settings so you can see everything in "recently" order".

"These are models that are looking at behaviors", he said.

Dorsey has explained Twitter's decision-making process as well as he ever needs to.

The Infowars Official app has become the App Store's third most-downloaded news app this week after Apple removed access on Sunday to some of Jones' podcasts from its digital store. Family members of some of the victims are suing Jones for defamation. Hannity has pushed a number of outlandish conspiracy theories on Fox News and his other platforms about President Barack Obama's birthplace, Hillary Clinton's health, and the murder of a Democratic National Committee employee.

Dorsey continued defending his decisions to Hannity, who at one point in the interview, argued that maybe the community on Twitter should decide such issues.

"I haven't heard those requests directly, but I'm sure someone is saying it somewhere", Dorsey said.

Within an hour of the CNN story going live, more than a dozen videos and tweets from Jones's account began disappearing from the platform. I think this is far more hard, far more nuanced than I think a lot of people imagine. "You enumerated a number of them around violent threats or giving up personal information around someone's home or office, or identifiable information that people could utilize to put them in real physical harm. We do believe in the power of free expression, but we also need to balance that with the fact that bad-faith actors intentionally try to silence other voices".
