Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the storm's center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles.

The center of Hector was projected to pass a few hundred miles south of Oahu and Kauai through early Thursday, the CPHC said.

Hurricane Hector has maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (215 kph) with stronger gusts possible.

Hawaii County officials declared a precautionary state of emergency ahead of the storm.
