Firefighters battle a rare 'firenado' at plastics factory in the UK

Swadlincote fire

Now firefighters have released footage of the blaze and the mesmerising firenado, which reached a height of over 50ft. Crews on the scene captured the remarkable footage of flames whirling upward from the raging flames torching the Derbyshire Facility.

A blaze turned into a tornado-like whirl as firefighters worked to extinguish a fire at a plastics factory in Derbyshire, England. The column of fire forms when eddies caused by the blaze lead to a powerful rotating updraft.

Firefighters witnessed the event while battling a blaze at a recycling center on Occupation Lane, according to Tom Augusztinyi, a watch manager at the fire department.

At about 15:00, firefighters started damping down the fire.

The fire involved approximately 10,000 sq metres of stacked plastic pallets at the factory, which makes plastic crates for supermarkets.

VIDEOS reveal city in chaos as Lombok crumbles under another natural disaster
Rescue workers are still digging through rubble and trying to get aid to victims of the earlier, larger quake. The first quake , a 6.9 magnitude event, killed almost 350 people, according to Indonesian state media .

"While the site of the fire is not directly next to any residential properties, we are still advising locals to keep their windows and doors closed until the fire is completely out and the smoke has subsided".

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said in the post that fire tornados were caused by thermal currents of warm air rising from the ground, drawing in fire and ash.

Thick black smoke from thousands of plastic pallets on fire could be seen across the East Midlands.
