Children Killed In Yemen’s Bus Attack

Yemen is in the grip of a brutal civil war

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said a hospital it supported in Saada had received dozens of casualties after the attack.

The bus hit by the missile was ferrying local civilians, a majority of them children, according to Yemeni tribal leaders.

In another video, which appears to show the immediate aftermath of the strike, several lifeless bodies of children lay under a blown-up bus.

Nearly 10,000 people - two-thirds of them civilians - have been killed since the Houthi movement took control of much of the north of the country, including the capital Sanaa, in 2014, forcing President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi into exile in neighbouring Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi-led coalition waging war on Yemen remained brazenly defiant on its new crime, calling the massacre a "legitimate action".

A week ago, at least 55 civilians were killed and 170 others wounded in a series of attacks on the rebel-held Red Sea port city of Hudaydah.

The official spokesman of the Arab Coalition in Yemen, Colonel Turki al-Maiki, announced on Thursday that the coalition launched an operation in Saada against Houthi elements who fired a ballistic missile on Jizan in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday evening.

The buses were targeted as they were passing through Dahyan market in the rebel-held province of Saada, according to the Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV.

Al-Malki insisted Thursday's attack carried out in Saada is a "legitimate military action" and is 'in accordance with global humanitarian law and customs.' He also accused the Houthis of recruiting children and using them in the battlefields to cover for their actions.

The UK and USA has been criticised for providing logistical and military support to the Saudi-led coalition. Its last air strike in Yemen was July 24 against Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, she said, adding that the command seeks to help partners mitigate civilian casualties. That assistance has come under sharp criticism from Congress and the global community as civilian deaths have continued to multiply, even as the coalition promises not to target civilians.

The Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014 and overthrew the internationally recognised government led by President Abdrabu Mansur Hadi during a transition of power from former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

USA bombs. US targeting. But the coalition denied carrying out any attacks in the city, saying it follows a "strict and transparent approach based on the rules worldwide law".

The war in the impoverished country has since left almost 10,000 people dead and unleashed what the United Nations describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

The U.N. special envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, has been pushing to bring the warring parties to restart peace talks.

The Houthis have fired a number of ballistic missiles at the Saudi capital, Riyadh, and other cities. He recently announced plans to invite Yemen's warring parties to Geneva on September 6 to hold the first round of consultations.
