Samsung is Making 4TB SSDs Cheaper for Everyone

"As we expand our lineup across consumer segments and to the enterprise, 4-bit terabyte-SSD products will rapidly spread throughout the entire market".

You can get a ton of storage for your new laptop - but you'll probably have to pay an arm and a leg for it. Putting a 4TB SSD in the new MacBook Pro immediately adds $3,200 to the cost, for example.

The new consumer QLC SSDs follow Samsung's launch of its 970 PRO and EVO M.2 form factor SSD sticks available in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB earlier in May. Based on the 1-terabit V-NAND, Samsung says that this industry-first solid state drive will deliver outstanding performance that's equivalent to the company's 3-bit design.

With the new 4-bit QLC SSD, Samsung has managed to produce hardware that has a sequential read speed of 540 MB/s and a sequential write speed of 520 MB/s.

Samsung says it has started production on 4-bit quad-level NAND cells (QLC), which stores more data in the same space as older 3-bit NAND cells (TLC).

Heat warning in effect for the Kawarthas until Tuesday
It says a humid air mass will move into southern Ontario and could stay there until a cold front moves in on Tuesday. For Halifax, daytime highs of 29 to 32 degrees are expected, with humidex values in the upper 30's.

The downside of moving up to four bits per memory cell, according to Samsung, is that makes it harder to maintain a device's performance and speed because the extra density would cause the electrical charge to fall by as much as half. Pricing and exact availability have yet to be announced.

Jaesoo Han, Executive VP of Memory Sales and Marketing at Samsung, said: "Samsung's new 4-bit SATA SSD will herald a massive move to terabyte-SSDs for consumers".

The new 4-bit (QLC, quad-level cell) SATA SSD drives are "expected to bring a new level of efficiency to consumer SSDs". We now have no indication on pricing.

Not only that, but that 1Tb V-NAND chip means that Samsung will be able to "efficiently produce a 128GB memory card for smartphones", so it certainly sounds like the company's plans for QLC could lead to big changes for storage in general.
