Only 33% of Americans approved of Trump's Helsinki summit with Putin

US senators push sanctions to send Putin election meddling warning

House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) on Sunday called on top intelligence officers to step down if President Donald Trump refuses to accept their assessment that the Russian government is interfering in USA elections.

But another US official called those accusations unfair and said Coats would never try to undercut or embarrass the president. But younger and older Americans tended to offer similar assessments to other questions.

President Trump's approval rating inched up from last month to the highest of his presidency, but American voters give him low marks for his handling of Russian Federation and the immigration crisis at the southern border, a poll released Sunday shows.

Gowdy said Trump needs to rely on his closest advisers - like Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, FBI Director Christopher Wray, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley - or the advisers "need to re-evaluate whether or not they can serve in this administration". By way of comparison, in the Post-Schar School survey, 87 percent of Republicans said they approved of Trump's overall job performance as president. He asked his interviewer, "Say that again, did I hear you?"

A bare majority of Republicans in the new poll - 51 percent - approve of Trump expressing doubts about US intelligence conclusions on Russian election interference.

Reaction to his comments were swift and critical - even among his Republican Party.

"He's changed his mind four times this week", Graham said.

Kerry's remarks came days after Trump called Biden a "dream" opponent in the 2020 presidential election and were part of a harsh critique of the president that suggested Trump was creating a diversion to the issues facing his White House. Tuchman pressed. "Should Donald Trump not have said that about his country?" He walked back that statement a day later, saying he'd meant to say he didn't see why Russian Federation wouldn't be involved.

He added: "And we are sending a signal that I just think is so, so damaging to our ability to be a positive force in being among the leaders in the world".

The issue bubbled up again Wednesday, when Trump was asked by a reporter if Russian Federation was still trying to meddle in US elections, particularly the upcoming midterms.

Trump appeared to answer, "No". In fact, he said Trump missed the opportunity to "distinguish" the U.S. Just like I consider myself to be responsible for things that happen in this country.

She wrote: "In Helsinki, President Trump agreed to ongoing working level dialogue between the two security council staffs".

Partisans split in their ratings of Trump's meeting with Putin, but Republicans are less united in support for Trump than in other recent polls about his presidency.
