More than 160 people sickened in outbreak linked to McDonald's salads

Two cases of an intestinal illness linked to McDonald's salads has been confirmed in Sangamon County.

The illnesses are a result of a tainted batch of lettuce from a McDonald's supplier in Streamwood, Illinois, according to the company.

The CDC says there people have been hospitalized in connection with the outbreak, but no one has died.

While many Americans have become familiar with news of E. coli poisoning and its own set of serious side effects, the cyclospora contamination at McDonald's causes victims to experience symptoms up to a week after eating the food in question.

The Food and Drug Administration is reporting an official total of 61 cases in 7 different states as of today, but that number is expected to grow in the immediate future as hospitals report additional cases to federal agencies, according to officials who spoke with CNBC.

The outbreak of an intestinal illness linked to McDonald's salads has sickened 163 people in 10 states, with IL and Iowa residents representing the highest totals among them, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said late on Thursday.

Cyclospora cayetanensis (cyclospora) is a parasite composed of a single cell, too small to be seen without a microscope.

The symptoms of a cyclospora infection include explosive and watery diarrhea that can recur, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue, and increased gas.

A week ago, the FDA reported there were 61 illnesses in seven states, majority in IL. Additionally, Del Monte is recalling "small veggie trays", which are 28oz and include broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery and dill dip that were distributed to IL and Indiana. Therefore, it is unlikely that cyclosporiasis is passed directly from one person to another. Additionally, they are often met with headaches, fevers, and other "flu-like symptoms".

"The health and safety of our customers and the people who work in McDonald's restaurants is always our top priority", the firm said in a statement on July 20. If not treated, the illness may last from a few days to a month or longer. If you ate at a McDonald's restaurant since mid-May 2018 and have been sick with these symptoms, you may be part of this McDonald's cyclospora outbreak.
