Trump aide alleged to have 'Russia ties' in secret USA documents

After the FISA documents were published, President Donald Trump criticized special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

Former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page on Sunday denied he was an intelligence agent for Russian Federation after the Justice Department released a wiretap application that said he engaged in "clandestine intelligence activities" on behalf of the Kremlin. He claimed that the documents "with little doubt that the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation misled the courts".

The FBI "believes Page has been the subject of targeted recruitment by the Russian government.to undermine and influence the outcome of the 2016 US presidential election in violation of USA criminal law", the FISA application read. Instead, it acknowledged events previously reported by the New York Times: A former Trump foreign policy adviser, George Papadopoulos, came under the scrutiny of investigators in July 2016 after boasting that Russian Federation had dirt on then-candidate Hillary Clinton to an Australian diplomat in London.

They said: "The FBI believes that the Russian government's efforts are being coordinated with Page and perhaps other individuals associated with [Trump's campaign]".

"For more than a year, House Republicans have bullied the Department of Justice and FBI to release highly sensitive documents to derail the Special Counsel's and other legitimate national security investigations and cover for the President", House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement.

Steele also alleged in the dossier that Page worked with Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort to exchange information with Russian operatives.

In March 2017, before news of the FISA warrant became public, Page sent a letter to the Senate intelligence committee saying he may have been wiretapped during the time he spent at Trump Tower for the campaign.

The bottom line from the non-redacted part of the FISA application for Carter Page: they attested that he was a Russian agent whose activities were part of a broad criminal plot to influence the election.

Earlier this month the Justice Department charged 12 Russian intelligence offers with acts related to Russia's hacking of the DNC's emails and targeting of state election systems.

The CNN host also asked Page if he had established relations with government officials, another claim found in the FISA warrant.

"Look, Jake, I, No, I've never been an agent of a foreign power by any stretch of the imagination, I may have back in the G20 when they were getting reading to do that in St. Petersburg, I might have participated in a few meetings that a lot of people including people from the Obama administration sitting on..."

The charges form part of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into U.S. intelligence findings that Russians conspired to tilt the election in Mr Trump's favour, and whether any of his campaign aides colluded.

Mr Page is an energy industry consultant with longstanding ties to Russian Federation.
