Trump administration releases Carter Page wiretap documents

Sen. Marco Rubio is refuting President Trump's latest claims that his campaign was being "illegally" spied on following the FBI's release of heavily redacted documents detailing the surveillance of former Trump campaign aide Carter Page.

Not so: The FBI released Saturday a redacted version of its FISA warrant to wiretap the former Trump campaign advisor, the New York Times reports.

The agents also believed, the documents say, that Page had been "collaborating and conspiring with the Russian government", and had "established relationships with Russian government officials, including Russian intelligence officers".

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement that "these documents provide clear evidence of 'Russia's coordination with Carter Page, ' a high-ranking Trump campaign official, 'to undermine and improperly and illegally influence the 2016 USA presidential election'".

Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California, a ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, said the documents lay out in detail "just why the Federal Bureau of Investigation was so concerned that Carter Page might be acting as an agent of a foreign power".

By March 2016, Mr Trump had identified Mr Page as one of a handful of campaign foreign policy advisers.

Trump charges the "FISA scam" led 'to the rigged Mueller Witch Hunt!,' referring to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russia's role in the election and allegations of obstruction against the president. Page has denied being an agent of Russian Federation, which he repeated Sunday to CNN, saying, "No".

That dossier alleges ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

The FBI, in its initial application the month before Mr Trump won the election, said it "believes that the Russian Government's efforts are being coordinated with Page and perhaps other individuals associated with Candidate #1's campaign". It marked the first time the government has released applications seeking wiretaps of an American under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. All old news, so far-the wiretapping of Page played out in a Republican-vs-Democrat memo war in February-which may make the release itself the biggest news item.

Of note, in the almost two years since the application was filed, Page hasn't been charged with any of the allegations contained within it.

"This is so ridiculous, it's just beyond words", Page told CNN's Jake Tapper when asked if he was an agent of a foreign power.

Last week, a federal grand jury charged 12 Russian intelligence officers with hacking Democratic computer networks in 2016, in the most detailed United States accusation yet that Moscow meddled in the presidential election to help Mr Trump.

Page himself wrote in a 2013 letter that he was an informal adviser to the Russian government on energy issues.

Trump tweeted heavily about the documents on Sunday morning and quoted some of the speakers on 'Fox & Friends, ' the morning news show of whom he is a regular viewer.
