Olympic figure skating medallist Denis Ten has been killed, with prosecutors in Kazakhstan saying they are treating the case as murder.

Kazinform reported that Ten was stabbed by two unidentified men in Almaty at 3 p.m. Friday local time and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Kazakh skating star Denis Ten died in the hospital after medics fought to save his life following the attack. Ten was just 25 years old.

Ten also acted as an ambassador for his hometown Almaty's bid for the 2022 Winter Games, which was eventually awarded to Beijing.

A statement from Timur Kulibayev, president of the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan, read: "On behalf of myself, on behalf of the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan and the entire sports community of our country, I express my most honest condolences on the untimely death of your son Denis Ten. Your time with us was way too short".
