Iran's Rouhani Warns Trump About 'Mother of All Wars'

Earlier this month Rouhani hinted that Tehran may block regional oil exports if its own sales are halted

Trump earlier this year pulled the USA out of the worldwide deal meant to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon and ordered increased American sanctions.

Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency quoted President Hassan Rouhani as warning Trump on Sunday: "Do not play with the lion's tail or else you will regret it".

Rouhani suggests peace is still possible and says "America must understand well that peace with Iran is the mother of all of peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars".

Rouhani's apparent threat earlier this month to disrupt oil shipments from neighboring countries came in reaction to looming USA sanctions and efforts by Washington to force all countries to stop buying Iranian oil.

In Washington, U.S. officials familiar with the matter told Reuters that the Trump administration has launched an offensive of speeches and online communications meant to foment unrest and help pressure Iran to end its nuclear programme and its support of militant groups.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday backed Rouhani's suggestion that Iran may block Gulf oil exports if its own exports are halted.

But it has since somewhat eased its stance, saying that it may grant sanction waivers to some allies that are particularly reliant on Iranian supplies. He made it clear that Tehran will not buckle under the economic pressure from Washington.

The US has provided a list of 12 demands that says Tehran needs to accept if it seeks relief from Washington's threats. "Are they prepared to accept this?"

"The word and even the signature of the Americans can not be relied upon, so negotiations with America are of no avail", Khamenei said.

The top general said although the USA is now focused on carrying out its economic threats against Iran, Tehran would do well to get ready to come to grips with other types of threats as well.

"The idea that problems can be resolved through negotiations or relations with the United States is a major error", he added.
