Iran warns United States against provocations; suggests peace possible

Trump has said he is open to a new deal that would cover not only Iran's nuclear facilities, but also its missile program and regional interventions.

Iran has been roiled by nationwide riots after Mr. Trump pulled out of an worldwide nuclear deal first brokered in 2015 by then-president Barack Obama.

"It should be abundantly clear that Secretary Pompeo, who called for bombing Iran instead of negotiations, is no friend of the Iranian people", Abdi added.

In a televised speech, Hassan Rouhani told the American president: "Do not play with the lion's tail, you will regret it forever".

In a speech at a conference for Iranian diplomats, Rouhani suggested peace was still possible but said the opposite was also true.

"If the Trump administration had a smidgen of goodwill, it would abolish the travel ban against the people of Iran who have never engaged in any acts of terrorism on US soil", Vaez added.

Rouhani went on to say that the US was not "in a position to incite the Iranian nation against Iran's security and interests", in an apparent reference to reported efforts by Washington to destabilize Iranian government.

"One who understands politics even a little bit wouldn't say "we will stop Iran's oil exports", he said, warning that the Strait of Hormuz is only one of the straits that Iran has control over.

Rouhani's apparent threat earlier this month to disrupt oil shipments from neighbouring countries came in reaction to looming USA sanctions and efforts by Washington to force all countries to stop buying Iranian oil.

Iranian officials have in the past threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil shipping route, in retaliation for any hostile United States action.

"The word and even the signature of the Americans can not be relied upon, so negotiations with America are of no avail", Khamenei said.

Europe opposes the move and has vowed to find ways of maintaining its trade ties with Iran, which under the deal curbed its nuclear programme in exchange for a lifting of sanctions.

Originally Trump demanded all other countries to stop buying its crude by November but now he says the United States may grant waivers to some allies heavily particularly reliant on Iranian supplies.

Khamenei said on Saturday it was an "obvious" mistake to negotiate with the U.S. because it does not abide by agreements.
