That Massive Black Sarcophagus Was Opened. Here's What's Inside

Three skeletons inside a 2,000 year old sarcophagus

Egyptian archaeologists on Thursday dashed local hopes that a newly discovered ancient sarcophagus might contain the remains of Alexander the Great, finding instead the mummies of what appeared to be a family of three.

More specifically, archaeologists from Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities found three male skeletons in a reddish-brown slop.

Could it contain the remains of ancient Greek leader Alexander the Great, or (less appealingly) a deadly curse?

Beyond the skeletons, the sarcophagus was inundated with sewage water, which accelerated the decomposition of the skeletons.

According to Egyptian news outlet El-Watan, they initially lifted the lid of the tomb by just 5cm (2 inches) before the pungent odour forced them from the inspection scene entirely.

"We found the bones of three people, in what looks like a family burial".

But, in a press release from Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, expert Shaaban Abdel Moneim said there was much to be learned from the discovery.

"The sarcophagus has been opened, but we have not been hit by a curse", Waziri declared, directly addressing internet memes that suggested that the mysterious black box was filled with a Hollywood-style calamity.

Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered an ancient pottery manufacturing workshop dating to more than 4,000 years ago.

"I was the first to put my whole head inside the sarcophagus. and here I stand before you". These pharaohs were involved in numerous wars and conflicts, and it's possible the three individuals found in the sarcophagus were killed in one of these squirmishes. "This should go well", said one Twitter ever.

Once something was found, a specialized restoration team will immediately take over, transferring the contents into an Alexandria museum storage to quickly start restoration procedures. It is three metres long and almost two metres high.

The unmarked tomb did not likely belong to any other notable ruler in the Ptolemaic period (332 BC-30 BC) or the subsequent Roman era, Mr Waziri said.
