Padres trade Hand, Cimber for Indians' Francisco Mejia

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

With an eye on October and beyond, the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians scooped up All-Star closer Brad Hand and fellow reliever Adam Cimber from the rebuilding San Diego Padres in exchange for switch-hitting catching prospect Francisco Mejia. Mejia was ranked the No. 1 catching prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline earlier this year and the No. 5 prospect in baseball by Baseball Prospectus. Last season, Cleveland had the best bullpen ERA in baseball. The unit has the second-worst ERA (5.28) and FIP (4.85) among all big league bullpens.

Hand has been the Padres closer for the past calendar year, after being traded to San Diego from the Miami Marlins, and has been the subject of trade rumors for nearly that length of time as well. He appeared in 11 games last season for Cleveland. The right-hander owns a 3.17 ERA and 2.32 FIP over 48 1/3 innings while striking out 9.5 batters per nine frames.

As for Cimber, in his first year in the majors, has 51 Ks to only 10 BBs this season. He's actually throwing it more often than his fastball right now, which makes sense because it's a top five slider in the game in the past three years - just a hair more valuable than Andrew Miller's slider.
