President Trump Says He Holds Putin 'Responsible' for Election Meddling

The White House said on Wednesday it is entertaining a proposal raised by Russian President Vladimir Putin to interrogate Americans in exchange for assistance in the ongoing USA investigation into election interference, putting the White House at odds with the State Department.

Amid bipartisan condemnation of Trump's embrace of a longtime USA enemy in Helsinki, the US president delivered a rare admission of error Tuesday, saying he misspoke by one word when he said he saw no reason to believe Russian Federation had interfered in the 2016 USA election.

Mr. Trump made the comments in an interview with "CBS Evening News" anchor Jeff Glor at the White House. But in return, Putin said he would expect the U.S. to allow Russian investigators to question what he called fugitives on American soil. "I never want to say never about anything, but it's certainly not high on our list of investigative techniques", he told the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado. Sanders repeated that Trump was not answering the question posed in the Cabinet meeting earlier, and said Vega didn't understand his response because she asked a follow-up question.

Faced with outrage at home, Trump on Tuesday sought to end 27 hours of bipartisan recrimination by delivering a rare admission of error, saying he misspoke during his press conference with Putin.

"Well, I accept. I mean, he's an expert", Mr. Trump said Wednesday.

Earlier Wednesday at a cabinet meeting, Trump replied "no" when asked by reporters whether Russian Federation was still targeting the United States.

After Sanders' comments, McFaul wrote on Twitter, "I hope the White House corrects the record and denounces in categorical terms this ridiculous request from Putin". Russian officials have said they want to interview Kremlin critics Bill Browder and former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul.

On Wednesday, part of our discussion on Russian Federation and election interference looked at how Trump's actions might be seen among his supporters.

After the outburst of news at the beginning of this week from President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin's meeting in Helsinki, Finland, we decided it was time to call a special midweek news roundtable to dig into the headlines.

Putin accused Browder of making campaign contributions to Trump's election rival Hillary Clinton with money he earned in Russian Federation on which he did not pay taxes.

For the past year and a half, even when President Donald Trump said he was being treated unfairly by mainstream news sources, he could rely on the support of conservative media outlets - until Helsinki. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., that would slap new sanctions on Russian Federation or any other country caught posting ads, running fake news or otherwise interfering with election infrastructure. "I think we did extremely well".

And Republican Senator Rob Portman said he was glad the President had clarified his comments.

"Will a strong statement - you know - President Obama supposedly made a strong statement", Trump continues. "Lots of other people out there".

White House officials did not elaborate on how Mr Trump came to issue the clarification, but administration aides described being stunned by his initial remarks Monday.
