Corning Gorilla Glass 6 offers improved durability for next-gen mobile devices

Gorilla Glass is one of the more popular choices for device makers, because it means they can tout their devices' durability for real world consumers.

Corning has just announced their latest Gorilla Glass 6 and it claims to be up to 2X better than their current Gorilla Glass 5. Now more than ever, he said, it's critical that cover glass provides outstanding protection. To improve cover glass performance, Corning scientists developed and engineered an entirely new material to address the challenge of multiple drops. Tests show that Gorilla Glass 6 survived fifteen drops from 1 meter before actually breaking. Under the same test conditions, competitive glass compositions did not survive the first drop.

The new glass composition has been chemically strengthened to offer "higher levels of compression" than what was possible with the previous iteration of the product.

According to Corning, people drop their phones an average of 7 times a year with more than 50% of drops occurring within a meter height. The next-generation Galaxy Note that is scheduled to arrive on August 9 could emerge as the first handset featuring Gorilla Glass 6. Corning believes that modern smartphone designs use glass for more than 85 percent of the enclosure.

The new glass cover is also created to work with newer technologies like thinner bezels and wireless charging. "This enables Gorilla Glass 6 to be more resistant to damage".

Corning's Gorilla glass has been a standard on every major smartphone for quite some time.

In the release, Corning said that Gorilla Glass 6 is "currently being evaluated" by several customers, and is expected to "reach the market in the next several months".
