Companies Recall Blood Pressure Medications Over Cancer Fears

The Pharmacy and Drug Control department at the ministry said it received memos from global organizations on the possibility of a carcinogenic flaw called n-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in the active substance (Valsartan) manufactured by the company.

The FDA says that patients who are taking the recalled valsartan-containing medicines should continue taking their medicine until they have a replacement product.

The move comes after 22 other countries recalled the drug due to it containing a chemical that poses a potential cancer risk. If you can't find the information on the bottle, you should contact your pharmacy.

At the time of the announced recall, Teva had not received any reports of adverse events related to the recall of 29 single lots and 51 combinations lots of valsartan. Major Pharmaceuticals as a distribution firm, is recalling all lots within expiry of Valsartan supplied by Teva Pharmaceuticals.

Instructions for returning recalled products and crediting are given in the recall letter. "This is why we've asked these companies to take immediate action to protect patients", said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

Health experts are frightened that this will create a huge problem and can undergo out of the control.
