May says Trump told her to sue the European Union over Brexit

Trump said, on Friday, during a joint press conference that he had given her a suggestion that she found too "brutal", regarding the Brexit negotiations with the EU.

Revealing the surprising suggestion on the BBC's Andrew Marr program on Sunday, May appeared to stifle what appeared to be a chuckle of disbelief at Trump's outlandish idea.

"In terms of who ultimately holds the pen on the papers that go to Cabinet for collective decision, it has been the Cabinet Office's Europe Unit, and they have clearly been operating to a different ultimate goal to the one what we were operating to".

In his interview with the Sun, Mr Trump said he would have handled Brexit talks "much differently", and added: "I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn't agree, she didn't listen to me".

If May fails to negotiate an agreement on the terms of Brexit before then, a "no deal" scenario could mean the United Kingdom would start trading with the European Union under World Trade Organisation rules, and would have uncertain consequences for the status of European Union citizens living in the United Kingdom, as well as Britons living in European Union countries.

But hours later he said a US-UK trade deal would "absolutely be possible".

"We would make a tremendously big deal" with Britain, Trump said in the interview, published by the Daily Mail, apparently trying to smooth over a firestorm created ahead of his visit.

Trump left Britain on Sunday after visiting with May, though his criticism of her plans seemed to overshadow attempts to secure a post-Brexit bilateral relationship.

In an explosive interview with The Sun newspaper published Thursday - just as May was hosting Trump at a lavish black-tie dinner - Trump said the British leader's approach likely "killed" chances of a free-trade deal with the United States. "Actually no. We're going into negotiations with them", Mrs May disclosed.

"This jeopardises the opportunities offered by Brexit", Davis wrote in the Financial Times on Sunday. Mrs May, he contended, was "a Remainer who remains a Remainer". "But in a trade sense, they've really taken advantage of us and many of those countries are in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and they weren't paying their bills".

"We need to keep our eyes on the prize".

He added: "None of this amounts to taking back control. some are saying that those on the other side of the argument have not worked out an alternative".

He later told TV host Piers Morgan that they had discussed the UK's controversial exit from the European Union.

She said such rules were needed to protect jobs in firms with supply chains that crossed borders and deal with the Irish border issue.

"They said that when they voted for Brexit".
