UK's latest Brexit plans likely to cross European Union red lines, Barnier hints

Theresa May the Prime Minister

European Union chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier raised fresh doubts that the bloc will accept Theresa May's plan for future economic ties that was agreed to at a United Kingdom cabinet meeting last week.

Jonson tendered his resignation a day after the UK Brexit minister stepped down from his post.

Theresa May's plan has been attacked from all sides - as unworkable and damaging for jobs by business figures - and as tying Britain to European Union market rules without any say over them by hard brexiteers.

May's office said in a terse statement that the prime minister had accepted Johnson's resignation and would name a replacement soon.

Mr Davis, who has been Brexit Secretary since Mrs May became prime minister in 2016, said he had made compromises since taking on the role, but this was "one compromise too far".

Hunt replaces Boris Johnson who resigned on Monday over his serious opposition to May's Brexit plans.

"It is as though we are sending our vanguard into battle with the white flags fluttering above them", Johnson wrote in a letter that underscored his credentials as a champion of full-speed Brexit.

"I can only regret that the idea of Brexit has not left with Davis and Johnson".

But within 48 hours of their publication, Davis had quit, saying she had already given too much away to the European Union, and Johnson followed.

All we have asked from the Prime Minister, is that she sticks to what she has promised on repeated occasions, when she declared that "Brexit means Brexit" and pledged to take back control of our money, borders and laws.

Under current trade agreements, food products can move quickly between the European mainland and the U.K. For example, the BRC said, salad greens can go from trucks in Spain on Monday to U.K. stores by Thursday, still with five days' shelf life.

And finally John Cleese is moving to "one of the nicest island" he has been to because he is fed up over the lies on both sides of the Brexit debate and really fed up with the press he told Emily Maitlis on BBC Newsnight.

The slew of resignations could possibly point to members of Parliament demanding a vote of no confidence in May, even though her team is confident that their Brexit plan would pass if it gets put to a vote.

With numbers tight in the Commons, the prime minister - who relies on Northern Ireland's DUP to win key votes - would be vulnerable to any rebellion among Eurosceptic MPs as she tries to pass key laws needed for Brexit preparation.

Juncker's chief spokesman said the departure of Davis posed no problem, saying the European Union was ready to talk "24/7".

Mrs May told MPs that the plan agreed by the cabinet at Chequers was the basis of a "responsible and credible" offer to restart renegotiations with the EU.

Mr Rees-Mogg - considered by some a favourite for leadership - expected Mrs May to remain at least until the official date of Brexit in March 2019.

Calling votes of no confidence is the responsibility of the chairman of the 1922 Committee, which includes all backbench Tory MPs.
