Watch: Demolition of twin towers at Cape Canaveral's historic Launch Complex 17

"With 61 years of history and 325 launches, it's been a pretty incredible piece of the space community for many years".

Launch towers that have graced Florida's Cape Canaveral since the early days of the space program came down Thursday morning.

The almost 60-metre-tall towers came tumbling down after explosives were activated, sending them falling in opposite directions at the US Air Force base in Florida.

A short ceremony was held before Brigadier-General Wayne Monteith, commander of the air force's 45th Space Wing, triggered the explosives.

Crews conducted safety checks on the towers at Launch Complex 17 as people gathered to watch the demolition. It was planned for years while waiting for the funding.

It's been almost seven years since the towers were used in a launch, and was used for Delta II and other notable missions, according to the report.

The site will now be occupied by Moon Express, a private company developing small lunar landers that NASA may use to send science instruments to the lunar surface in the next few years, according to Florida Today.
