U.S. salmonella outbreak: 'Do not eat Honey Smacks,' shoppers told

"Retailers can not legally offer the cereal for sale and consumers should not purchase Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal", the agency said in a statement.

"Retailers can not legally offer the cereal for sale and consumers should not purchase Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal", it wrote.

The Food and Drug Administration says retails still can not legally sell Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal following a recall. Samples of the facility's environment and the product collected during the FDA's inspection match the outbreak strain of salmonella mbandaka, the agency said. Those symptoms can last between four and seven days, and such illnesses send about 23,000 people to the hospital every year, according to the CDC.

A number of local tweets poured in with users claiming to have heard a loud explosion followed by the sounds of ambulances. The bomb eventually exploded, killing everyone on board.

The Food and Drug Administration said about 1.3 million cases of the popular Kellogg's cereal, described as a sweetened puffed wheat product, had been recalled from more than 30 states last month, Reuters reported.

Any consumers who store cereal that looks like Honey Smacks in a container without the packaging and don't remember the brand or type are advised to throw it away.

The cereal is the likely source of the salmonella outbreak, the CDC said. It says most people infected with salmonella develop a fever, cramps or diarrhea within 12 to 72 hours of being exposed to the bacteria. Thirty people have been hospitalized in this outbreak. About 450 people die in the United States each year from salmonella. Pennsylvania (8), MA (7), and California (6) have the most cases, but illnesses are widespread and affecting all ages. The full map of how the sick are spread among the states can be found here.
