Trump tweets 'very nice note' from Kim

Mr Trump said the letter from Mr Kim (dated 6 July), was "a very nice note".

"I firmly believe that the strong will, honest efforts and unique approach of myself and Your Excellency Mr. President aimed at opening up a new future between the DPRK and the USA will surely come to fruition", he added.

"I sincerely believe that the strong will, honest efforts, and unique approach of myself and Your Excellency Mr President, aimed at opening up a new future between the DPRK and the USA, will surely come to fruition".

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said North Korea called at midday Thursday and offered to meet on Sunday instead.

The agency also says that North Korean officials have indicated they have "as many as 200 sets of remains" already recovered that could be ready for return.

But skepticism remains over whether North Korea's findings will satisfy Japan.

Pompeo traveled to Pyongyang for two days last week in a bid to flesh out denuclearization commitments made during last month's historic summit between Trump and Kim. The discussions about returning Americans soldiers killed nearly 70 years ago was perhaps the most tangible outcome from Pompeo's trip, which analysts expected would at least secure the release of some remains. US intelligence analysts said in the wake of the summit that Pyongyang is working to hide key elements of its program, including the number of weapons it maintains and secret production facilities.

Unpacking Trump's claim of new funding from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members
Still, Trump has been more conciliatory behind the scenes, including at a leaders' dinner Wednesday. I think they agree with me on immigration.

Hours after Trump's tweet, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said North Korea offered to meet a US delegation on Sunday to discuss the repatriation of remains of USA soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War, a pledge Trump had said he secured from Kim during last month's summit. About 100 wooden transport cases were sent to the DMZ in recent weeks to prepare for receiving US troop remains.

Pompeo dismissed the criticism, stating the North Koreans "did not push back" at discussions over the circumstances under which Pyongyang might surrender and dismantle its nuclear weapons program.

Kim Jong Un had committed to returning the remains of the troops from the 1950-53 conflict during talks with US President Donald Trump on 12 June.

United States has asked the United Nations Security Council to order an immediate halt to all deliveries of refined oil products to North Korea after finding that Pyongyang had violated restrictions on those imports.

Earlier in the day, an official at Seoul's foreign ministry voiced expectation that the June summit agreement, including the repatriation, can quickly be enforced so as to achieve the goal of the complete denuclearization of the peninsula.

Despite Pompeo's claims that his meetings in Pyongyang last week were productive, the North Korean news agency quoted unnamed DPRK officials as saying the meetings were awful and that United States demands for denuclearization were "robber-like" (the media has translated this as "gangster").
