Thai Soccer Team Shown Safe in Hospital in First Footage Since Rescue

Boys rescued from Thailand’s Tham Luang Cave had to turn down an invitation to the World Cup to remain under medical care. More

This week, after an 18-day ordeal, they were all rescued from the cave complex.

Speaking earlier Wednesday, health ministry inspector Tongchai Lertvirairatanapong said the boys were in "good condition", despite each losing an average of two kilograms (4.4 pounds) in weight during their time in the cave.

The boys seem to be going through progressive stages once they reach the hospital.

Four boys were rescued Sunday, and another four were guided to safety on Monday.

The extraordinary operation to save the boys came to an end on Tuesday, when the Thai Navy SEAL rescuers and a doctor followed the last four boys and their coach out of the cave complex.

In a video released Wednesday, three of the 12 rescued boys are seen recovering in their hospital beds.

The video footage shows how engineers preparing for the operation had carved neat steps into steep slopes in the tunnels to make it easier, although they were cascading with water. Some sat and made the "peace sign" gesture for the camera. The photos also showed parents of the boys looking at their children through a glass window.

Parents of the boys have been watching their children at the hospital as they recover and are evaluated by doctors. Family members were not allowed to enter the hospital room in order to prevent infection.

The 12 boys and their coach, Ekkapol Ake Chantawong, were confirmed to be physically healthy, with only three of the boys treated for minor pneumonia.

Despite spending days in the dark, dank, cave health officials said the boys - who are aged 11 to 16 - are in good physical and mental health and eating normal food. They would then need to recuperate at home for 30 days, he said.

A Thai navy SEAL diver told AFP news agency the boys were sleeping or partially conscious as they were carried out of the cave.

"We would like to thank everyone for the messages of support we have received following the successful extraction of the team and Royal Thai Navy Seals from the cave", the statement reads.

"My wife actually grew up with the Thai Navy SEAL that died in the cave". He ran out of air while trying to swim out of the cave.

Narongsak Osatanakorn, the official overseeing the rescue operation, said the boys should not be blamed for their near tragedy.

"And we're here witnessing the events, gathering some contacts and everything, to really tell a story about an worldwide effort, the entire world coming together to save (12) kids trapped in this Thai cave".

"We're just very happy that the boys are out and safe", he said. "Everyone worked together without discrimination of race or religion as the ultimate goal was to save the youth football team".

British divers found the 13 members of the soccer team huddled on a muddy ledge in a partly flooded chamber inside the cave.

"The world just needs to know that what was accomplished was a once in a lifetime rescue", Anderson told The Associated Press in an interview today. Hai Do was the editor.
