Surya Grahan 2018: All you need to know about Solar Eclipse 2018

The first solar eclipse of the year was observed on February 15, largely visible in South American nations.

This partial solar eclipse will be visible to people in some parts of southern Australia, including those in Adelaide and Melbourne, will see a very small fraction of the eclipse.

The next solar eclipse, also a partial one, will be on August 11 and could be seen in parts of North America, Russia, eastern Europe, north and West Asia, and the Arctic region.

A solar eclipse is one of the grandest spectacles of nature where the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, blocking out the sun's disk completely. "People who are sick or exhausted, may not fast during the eclipse period".

The second solar eclipse of the year will take place on Friday, July 13, 2018. There has not been a solar eclipse on Friday the 13th since December 13, 1974, according to NASA.

According to experts the intake of food, do's and dont's during an eclipse differ too. She said, "It is advisable to have any food prior to eclipse or after".

People who are planning to view the partial eclipse should make sure to wear proper glasses to protect their eyes from the sun (eyewear is not required to look at lunar eclipses). Ayurveda believes that in the absence of sunlight, the bacteria tend to get active. This time around the eclipse is just for an hour, so it should not be so hard to fast.

Another historical association with the unlucky date is that King Philip of France arrested hundreds of Knights Templar on Friday, October 13, 1307. However, in olden days the period of solar eclipse was believed to be an inauspicious event as the main energy providing source sun is not clearly visible.

For stargazers, there will be disappointment, as the partial solar eclipse has already taken place in the early hours of this morning. The blood moon is estimated to last over 100 minutes and is expected to cast a larger shadow over the Earth than previously recorded moons. It is expected to occur on July 27-28 at 7.30 pm UTC (12 am IST) and end at 9.13 pm UTC (1.43 am IST).
