Canada To Lead NATO Training Mission In Iraq

Canadian forces have been tapped to lead NATO's new military adviser mission in Iraq, as the alliance looks to expand and extend its operations in the war-torn country.

Trudeau's announcement comes a day ahead of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, where the stage is set for another confrontation between world leaders and Donald Trump, as Canada and other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies prepare to counter the USA president's complaint that they aren't carrying their fair share of the burden of being part of the military alliance.

But any increases in military spending will not come as a result of pressure to do so from "people talking about a two per cent goal", he said when asked about Trump, but rather because of a desire to live up to the country's commitments to its military allies around the world.

The Prime Minister's Office said Trump and Trudeau "had a conversation on the margins of the meetings today about trade, including NAFTA".

Canadian forces are already deployed in Iraq as part of Operation IMPACT, which one of several military adviser missions carried out USA and coalition forces under Operation Inherent Resolve. "We are proud to take a leadership role in Iraq, and work with our Allies and the Government of Iraq, to help this region of the Middle East transition to long-lasting peace and stability". "But most importantly we have decisions that are pushing this alliance forward and making us stronger", Xinhua quoted NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg as saying during a press conference at the end of the first day of the NATO Summit taking place in Brussels.

"My message is that we are actually now stepping up", Stoltenberg said.

Being able to shoot down incoming missiles could easily become a multi-billion dollar necessity for Australia, while the navy will need to be enlarged and cyber-defence and intelligence gathering upgraded. Germany leads a similar force in Lithuania, Britain leads one in Estonia and the US leads in Poland. "Are we contributing the kinds of resources and demonstrating the kind of commitment to the alliance that always needs to be there?'" Russian Federation has since been supporting them financially and militarily. Canada leads the mission, known as Operation Reassurance, which includes troops from Albania, the Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain.
