Justice Dept reopens investigation into Emmett Till’s lynching murder

Till a 14-year-old black Chicago boy who was kidnapped tortured and murdered in 1955 after he allegedly whistled at a white woman in Mississippi. The federal government has reopened its investigation into

He says he assumes his book helped prompt the renewed investigation of the black teen's brutal slaying.

"It's possible that the investigation will turn up something".

In the January 1956 Look magazine article, titled, "The shocking story of approved killing in Mississippi", Bryant and Milam said they went looking for the "Chicago boy" with the initial intent of scaring him and putting him in his place. Still, he said investigators may be able to link it to other material in their possession.

Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago, was visiting relatives in rural MS when he was accused of whistling and making sexual advances at a white woman, Carolyn Bryant.

According to the Associated Press, the federal government has reopened the investigation into Till's murder. The official wasn't authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.

Thursday, the Associated Press reported that, back in March of this year, the Justice Department revealed the reopening to Congress in a report and cited "new information". "Only the powers that be know if there's anything", Parker told ABC7 Eyewitness News Thursday.

The case was closed in 2007 after authorities said the suspects had died and the state grand jury didn't file any charges. The Justice Department also declined to comment.

It's unclear what new charges could result from a renewed investigation, said Tucker Carrington, a professor at the University of MS law school. The government hasn't specified if any new charges will be added, or if the prosecution will bring a case to anyone involved.

The men later confessed to killing the boy in a magazine interview but weren't retried, and both men are now dead. Both are now dead.

Bryant, whose name is now Carolyn Donham, is in her 80s and lives in North Carolina.

Till's cousin, Deborah Watts, said she was not told the case was reopened until AP contacted her but said it was "wonderful". They beat him, tortured him, and threw his body into the Tallahatchie River with the fan of a cotton gin tied to his neck with barbed wire.

Emmett's mother demanded that her son's body be returned to Chicago, where he was put on public display for a viewing. Images of his mutilated body gave witness to the depth of racial hatred in the Deep South and helped build momentum for subsequent civil rights campaigns. Deliberations barely took an hour, and one juror claimed the acquittal could've come sooner had they not stopped to have a soda.

"He said, 'How about a date, baby?'" she testified, according to a trial transcript released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation a decade ago.

In her testimony at the murder trial, Bryant said that a "nigger man" grabbed her by the hand in her store and said to her, "How about a date, baby?"

Though a judge ruled Carolyn's testimony inadmissible in court, her husband and Milam were quickly acquitted. An all-white jury freed her husband and the other man even without it. Testimony indicated a woman might have been in a vehicle with Bryant and Milam when they abducted Till, but no one else was ever charged.

Carolyn Donham claimed Till had accosted her, but told author Timothy B Tyson it was untrue.

"Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him", the book quotes her as saying.
